Joan Wellman, who has been called ‘one of the true pioneers in the Lean healthcare world,’ has announced that she will retire from her role as Executive Vice President at Simpler Consulting. After nearly thirty years, Wellman will step away from a successful career that has allowed her to help organizations achieve sustainable change, embrace transformation, and deliver breakthrough results.
Joan started her career in Lean at Deltapoint Corporation, where she successfully consulted to large-scale change initiatives across many industries, including aerospace, telecommunications, high technology, and energy. In 1995, she was one of the first to apply Toyota business principles in healthcare, and five years later she founded Joan Wellman and Associates (JWA), a consultancy that has since defined Lean methodology for pediatric hospitals and academic medical systems.
In 2010, she chronicled over a decade of healthcare improvement work in “Leading the Lean Healthcare Journey” with co-authors Pat Hagan and Dr. Howard Jeffries. The book’s second edition was published in 2014 along with co-author Cara Bailey, emphasizing the cultural change required to achieve long term improvement in healthcare.
Simpler Consulting acquired JWA in 2014. At the time Wellman reflected on the future of the two organizations, and the possibilities that lay ahead. "I'm thrilled at the prospect of working with Simpler to create an extraordinary new force in improving the quality, availability, and experience of healthcare." Since that time JWA has continued to thrive within the Simpler Consulting portfolio of services, even after the organization became part of the IBM Watson Health business.
“In the time that I have worked with, and personally known Joan, she has always demonstrated passion, and a strong commitment to help enable organizations to build a robust management system and transform the way they deliver value,” said Mike Chamberlain, President, Simpler Consulting, North America. As we prepare to wish Joan farewell, the JWA and Simpler teams are indebted to her for her vision and dedication. She will be sorely missed, but we wish her nothing but the best as she steps into this new phase in her life.”
Joan plans to remain an active member of Simpler Consulting’s Healthcare Advisory Board. Joan can be reached at email@example.com
